The Defiance of Fort McHenry

To celebrate the 4th of July holiday, DaytonDUI is publishing some of the great documents upon which our freedom rests. This spirited poem, "The Defiance of Fort McHenry" inspired our national anthem. O! say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there – O! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave ...

Common Sense, by Thomas Paine

Leading up to the Independence Day holiday, DaytonDUI will be publishing the great documents supporting our independence.  These documents are what it means to be an American.
