Beer Festivals in Ohio

Rick Armon at the Beer Blog has compiled a list of Ohio's beer festivals.  Some such as the International Beer Fest in Cleveland and the Cincy Winter Beerfest in Cincinnati will draw thousands. DUI Patrols To Increase For New Year

Today the Ohio State Highway Patrol issued a statement on its web site announcing its "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" efforts will be stepped up throughout the New Year Holiday.  The statement reads, "[w]ith the upcoming New Year’s Holiday, the Patrol is urging motorists to not get behind the wheel impaired. During last year’s holiday reporting period of Midnight on December 30, 2010, through 11:59 p.m. on January 2, 2011 – 10 people lost their lives on Ohio’s roadways, with 70 percent of these deaths involving an impaired driver."DUI attorney Charles M. Ohio State Highway Patrol Reports A Safe Holiday Weekend

During this past holiday reporting period of Midnight, December 23 through 11:59 a.m. on December 26, eight people were killed, with one death attributed to impaired driving. This represents a nearly 43 percent decline in fatalities from last year when 14 people were killed and the lowest amount of Christmas Holiday fatalities in the past four years. Springfield OVI Checkpoint Tonight (Dec. 16, 2011)

There will be an OVI sobriety checkpoint tonight in Clark County, Springfiield, Ohio beginning at 8:30 pm on the 1200 block of West First Street. NO REFUSAL Checkpoint tonight in Dayton (Dec. 9th)

Dayton will be holding a "NO REFUSAL" sobriety checkpoint tonight from 9pm until 2am.  The checkpoint will be at North Main and Hillcrest.  Judges will be standing by to issue warrants for forced blood draws should a person choose to refuse a breath test.  This is manipulative, coercive and un-American.  The checkpoint is being conducted by multiple agencies and is being coordinated by the Montgomery County DUI Task Force.  Be smart. DUI Arrests Are Up, Fatalities Are Down

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was busy this Thanksgiving  holiday.  OVI arrests were up 14 percent compared with last year's holiday.  Drug arrests jumped 37 percent.  There was also a major law enforcement effort including OVI checkpoints, saturation patrols and overtime patrol "crackdowns."Preliminary reports released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol show that 14 people were killed on Ohio's roadways between the Wednesday before and the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Clark County OVI Checkpoint (Nov. 23rd)

UPDATE:  OVI Checkpoint In Springfield Today An OVI checkpoint will be manned by the Ohio State Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officers on Wednesday from 8:30 p.m. until 12 midnight in downtown Springfield along U.S. 40 in front of the new hospital building.  Assisting in the checkpoint will be the Springfield Police Division, Clark County Sheriff Deputies, the Enon Police and medical personnel.  We had previously reported that a second checkpoint was operating in the afternoon in Springfield, but this report was wrong. Middletown OVI Checkpoint Tonight (Nov. 23rd)

MADD Calls For No Refusal Weekends and Interlock Devices

Kicking off their annual holiday crackdown on drunk driving, local law enforcement and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) held an event which was highlighted by MADD's release of its Report to the Nation.  MADD gave Ohio three out of five stars for its efforts in DUI enforcement.  Ohio’s three stars recognized statewide use of sobriety checkpoints, automatic driver’s license revocation, and enhanced penalties for child endangering while driving under the influence.The two measures MADD said Ohio should implement statewide are ignition interlock systems — Breathalyzers that are connected to a vehicle’s ignition — for all first-time offenders and no-refusal checkpoints...
