I Oppose OVI Checkpoints – Text “DaytonDUI” To 313131

Why do I oppose OVI checkpoints? I oppose OVI checkpoints because they are wrong! When I was a kid growing up in the Miami Valley, we believed that what separated us from the evil Soviet Union was our freedom.  It was a Cold-War trope that in America you need not fear officers of the state stopping you for no reason to ask for your papers. Americans travel freely!  It was at the end of the Cold-War that America began its decades long War on Drugs.  The War on Drugs fundamentally changed who we are. We started to fear each other. We no...

No Sobriety Checkpoints In Columbus

In a rare and unexpected move, there will be No Sobriety checkpoints in Columbus. There will be no grant-funded drunk driving checkpoints in Columbus. The Columbus Division of Police has declined to accept grant funds.  According to the Columbus Dispatch, Sgt. Michael Smith told law enforcement partners, "By order of Chief Jacobs, grant funding has been declined to fund future sobriety checkpoints operations." In addition, "It is with great disappointment that I report to you that Columbus Division of Police no longer has a formal OVI task force." This means that Columbus will rely upon traditional policing to target impaired drivers instead of...

Marijuana OVI Discussed At Ohio Municipal League

Marijuana OVI Discussed At Ohio Municipal League Marijuana OVI, driving while high on cannabis, was a topic for debate at the August 5th meeting of the Ohio Municipal League. I joined Rob Ryan, (Ohio Patients Network, Ohio NORML), Dr. Al Staubus (leading expert and toxicologist), Tim Johnson (former police officer and Drug Recognition Expert) on a panel to address the implementation of Ohio's Medical Marijuana Law and how that law will impact OVI.  Rob Ryan led the talk. He took the audience through the history of cannabis regulation in Ohio.  The most important point was that marijuana IS NOT a substance that...

Under the federal program (SAFETEA-LU), Ohio was eligible for this grant in one of two ways:

Less OVI Checkpoints, More OVI Arrests

Did you notice there were less OVI checkpoints this year? Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers made the decision to change from an OVI checkpoint strategy, to a more concentrated OVI patrol strategy.  So, how many OVI arrests did the Ohio State Highway Patrol make over night Dec. 31 into Jan. 1 in our area?  Numbers from a 12-county area, including Montgomery and Miami counties, shows 19 OVI offenses. Those numbers include: 7 from the Dayton post that covers Montgomery and Preble counties; 2 from the Springfield post for Clark and Champaign counties; 3 from the Xenia post in Greene County; 6 from the Piqua...

Dayton OVI Checkpoint Results

The results are in from the Dayton OVI checkpoint held last Saturday.  ZERO! There were zero arrests for OVI (drunk driving) at the checkpoint. Once again, the absence of arrests were not a deterrent to law enforcement who labeled the checkpoint a success due to its deterrent effect upon the general public.  Other citations include: one for driving without a license, one for driving with a suspended license and one seat belt violation.Police also arrested one person on an outstanding warrant. Saturation patrols netted two arrests for drunk driving.  Again, as we have mentioned, saturation patrols require a good basis for the...
