You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. I have dedicated my professional practice to defending the rights of people accused of criminal offenses. It makes you appreciate the amazing trust that our Founders had in the ability of the average citizen to govern themselves. Further, you come to love the power of the citizen to act as a check on government abuse and over-reach. I am proud of that system.  My job is to hold the government to their burden of proof, thereby making the system fair and just. Too much power concentrated in the hands of the prosecutor and/or the police would make for a county our Founders did not contemplate.

So raise a glass to the freedoms afforded by the Founders and our Independence from Kings and tyrants. Power to the People!
