Memorial Day OVI Checkpoints [updated for 5/26]
SATURDAY UPDATES INCLUDING DAYTON’S NO-REFUSAL CHECKPOINT LOCATION
Wow! There is so much activity that you should check back as we plan to update this post as we receive information about checkpoints in and around the Miami Valley. We post the locations and times of checkpoints to aide in the effort to cause people to plan ahead before finding themselves in a compromising or dangerous situation. State officials say the goal of checkpoints is more about awareness than arrests. Multiple OVI checkpoints will be held in the area this holiday weekend as part of a fight against alcohol-related crashes for which the state grants millions of dollars in federal funds, mostly to pay officers for overtime work.
CLARK COUNTY OVI CHECKPOINT. The State Highway Patrol will be conducting an OVI checkpoint in Clark County beginning at 8pm on West North Street in front of the Cancer Center. In 2009, Clark County inched its way up the alcohol-related fatality list and qualified for county-wide OVI task force grants. Task Force partners include the Springfield Police Division, the Clark County Combined Health District, Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management Association, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Box 27, Ohio Department of Transportation and Enon, South Charleston, Tremont City, German Twp. and North Hampton police departments. One may question the impact of checkpoints on the local economy. According to the Dayton Daily News, Anita Biles, the task force coordinator for Clark County admitted, “When we do a checkpoint, it seems like it’s a ghost town.”
MONTGOMERY COUNTY OVI CHECKPOINTS. Dayton, Ohio – the Dayton Police Department, along with members of the Combined Agency OVI Task Force of Montgomery County, will operate a “no refusal” sobriety checkpoint tonight, at 7:00 PM in the area of N. Gettysburg and Kings Highway. A “no-refusal” checkpoint includes a prosecutor on site and a judge on call to quickly acquire a warrant if a subject refuses a Breathalyzer test.
Dayton’s New Source is reporting that an OVI checkpoint will be held in Kettering on Friday evening along Wilmington Pike in the vicinity of Crawdaddy’s (between Stroop & Marshall). The checkpoint will operate from 9 pm until 2 am. Thanks to the Kettering Police for providing the details.
FRANKLIN COUNTY OVI CHECKPOINT: Columbus will have a checkpoint Friday night in Hilliard on Cemetery Road, just east of Leap Road. This checkpoint will operate from 9 pm until 3 am.
CLICK IT OR TICKET. Memorial Day is the official beginning of the state’s Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign. According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, in 2009, 397 of the people killed in crashes on Ohio’s roads were not wearing seat belts. For the second year in a row, Memorial Day has ranked second-deadliest out of the top six major holidays on Ohio’s roads. Of the 2,049 crashes during the 2011 Memorial Day holiday in Ohio, there were 884 injuries and 12 fatalities.
TRUCK SHIELD. State Troopers are hoping a new program will help to keep your families safe on the roads this Memorial Day Weekend. The program is called “Truck Shield” and its goal is to have truck drivers assist the State Highway Patrol. “We want truck drivers to be an extra set of eyes and ears for us. We want them to call in any criminal activity- from drunk driving, to human trafficking.” Sgt. Jeff Kramer from the Dayton Post of the State Highway Patrol said. “They can give us the information and then we’ll investigate and take it from there.” he said.
