Less OVI Checkpoints, More OVI Arrests

If you want to hear about checkpoints in your area sign up for text alerts. Did you notice there were less OVI checkpoints this year? Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers made the decision to change from an OVI checkpoint strategy, to a more concentrated OVI patrol strategy.  So, how many OVI arrests did the Ohio State Highway Patrol make over night Dec. 31 into Jan. 1 in our area?  Numbers from a 12-county area, including Montgomery and Miami counties, shows 19 OVI offenses. Super Bowl DUI Patrols 2013

This weekend, more than 81 local law enforcement agencies around the state will be conducting more than 1,925 hours of enforcement activity and 1,100 hours of saturation patrols, funded by federal grants provided through OTSO.  The FBI compared saturation patrols vs. checkpoints in Ohio, Missouri and Tennessee.  The study showed that "Overall, measured in arrests per hour, a dedicated saturation patrol is the most effective method of apprehending offenders (Source: FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, January 2003).  As this author has long argued, the saturation patrol is also more in keeping with American standards of justice than a checkpoint, as officers...

New Year’s Eve By The Numbers

According to this storyin the Dayton Daily News, New Year's Eve was safe. "There were relatively few OVI arrests, and the Dayton Daily News had received no reports of traffic fatalities directly attributed to drunken driving Saturday night as of Sunday afternoon."  The most active State Highway Patrol Post was Montgomery County which made seven OVI arrests over the weekend.  Miami County OSP made three arrests, Warren County OSP made one and Greene County made no OVI arrests over the New Year's Eve weekend. Kettering DUI Sting Set For Tonight (Dec. 30th)

Tonight from 8pm until 3am, the Kettering Police Department will be conducting an enhanced enforcement event.  The "sting" will target DUI offenders and will be similar to the previous efforts.  As reported in the Dayton Daily News,"the Task Force chose tonight rather than Saturday night for enforcement because, in recent years, there have been fewer drivers on New Year’s Eve."  Expect extra patrols and saturation patrols looking for signs of impaired driving.DUI attorney Charles M.
