Policing For Profit Approved By Ohio Supreme Court

If you were hoping that the Ohio Supreme Court would curtail a city's ability to implement policing for profit, you would be disappointed.  Last week, in Walker v. Toledo, Slip Opinion No. 2014-Ohio-5461, a divided Supreme Court ruled that cities in Ohio have complete freedom to set up tribunals that do away with due process protections for motorists accused by a machine.The majority opinion, written by Justice Kennedy held specifically that, Municipalities have home-rule authority under Ohio Constitution, Article XVIII,to impose civil liability on traffic violators through an administrativeenforcement system—Ohio Constitution, Article IV, Section 1 and R.C.1901.20 do not endow municipal courts...

Fred Dressel Takes The Bench At The Kettering Municipal Court

Congratulations to the Honorable Fred W. Dressel who took the helm at the Kettering Municipal Court at the beginning of June.  Dressel was appointed by Gov. John Kasich to replace the late Robert L. Moore who passed away earlier in the year.  Judge Dressel has served as acting magistrate in Kettering and acting magistrate for the Vandalia Municipal Court and as an assistant public defender for the Montgomery County Public Defender's Office.  If you have been arrested for OVI in Centerville, Kettering, Moraine or Washington Township, your misdemeanor OVI case will be heard in the Kettering Court by either the newly appointed Judge Dressel or the Honrable Thomas Hanna.  If you need...

Miami County Municipal Court Gets New Judge

--from CNO--Miami County Prosecutor Gary A. Nasal will soon be on the other side of the bench after his appointment today by Gov. John Kasich to the Miami County Municipal Court.
