New Year’s Eve By The Numbers

According to this storyin the Dayton Daily News, New Year's Eve was safe. "There were relatively few OVI arrests, and the Dayton Daily News had received no reports of traffic fatalities directly attributed to drunken driving Saturday night as of Sunday afternoon."  The most active State Highway Patrol Post was Montgomery County which made seven OVI arrests over the weekend.  Miami County OSP made three arrests, Warren County OSP made one and Greene County made no OVI arrests over the New Year's Eve weekend. Extra Patrols In Montgomery County Throughout New Year Holiday

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has announced that it is doubling its forces on Saturday to combat drunk drivers during the New Year's Eve holiday.  According to WDTN,  [see here] Troopers will be focusing on areas like Harrison Township, Butler Township and the Dayton Mall area.  Not coincidently, these areas are the areas frequently targeted for checkpoint enforcement.  No announcements of OVI checkpoints have been made.  Other announcements from the Ohio State Highway Patrol have indicated that 80 Ohio jurisdictions are participating in the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign and will have extra patrols throughout the New Year...

Kettering DUI Sting Set For Tonight (Dec. 30th)

Tonight from 8pm until 3am, the Kettering Police Department will be conducting an enhanced enforcement event.  The "sting" will target DUI offenders and will be similar to the previous efforts.  As reported in the Dayton Daily News,"the Task Force chose tonight rather than Saturday night for enforcement because, in recent years, there have been fewer drivers on New Year’s Eve."  Expect extra patrols and saturation patrols looking for signs of impaired driving.DUI attorney Charles M. DUI Patrols To Increase For New Year

Today the Ohio State Highway Patrol issued a statement on its web site announcing its "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" efforts will be stepped up throughout the New Year Holiday.  The statement reads, "[w]ith the upcoming New Year’s Holiday, the Patrol is urging motorists to not get behind the wheel impaired. During last year’s holiday reporting period of Midnight on December 30, 2010, through 11:59 p.m. on January 2, 2011 – 10 people lost their lives on Ohio’s roadways, with 70 percent of these deaths involving an impaired driver."DUI attorney Charles M. Ohio State Highway Patrol Reports A Safe Holiday Weekend

During this past holiday reporting period of Midnight, December 23 through 11:59 a.m. on December 26, eight people were killed, with one death attributed to impaired driving. This represents a nearly 43 percent decline in fatalities from last year when 14 people were killed and the lowest amount of Christmas Holiday fatalities in the past four years. In addition, Patrol OVI arrests increased more than 28 percent. OSP Announces Increased Holiday Patrols

Today, the Ohio State Highway Patrol released two press releases announcing they will be out in force this holiday season.  You may have noticed the ubiquitous "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" commercials and increased law enforcement presence along our roadways. Through December 11, troopers have arrested 1,383 more drivers for OVI than during the same period in 2010.   Last year fatalities increased to 1,080 over a record low of 1,022 in 2009.  With the upcoming holidays, the Patrol is reminding drivers that this can be one of the most dangerous times of the year due to an increase in impaired...

Springfield OVI Checkpoint Tonight (Dec. 16, 2011)

There will be an OVI sobriety checkpoint tonight in Clark County, Springfiield, Ohio beginning at 8:30 pm on the 1200 block of West First Street. DUI Arrests Are Up, Fatalities Are Down

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was busy this Thanksgiving  holiday.  OVI arrests were up 14 percent compared with last year's holiday.  Drug arrests jumped 37 percent.  There was also a major law enforcement effort including OVI checkpoints, saturation patrols and overtime patrol "crackdowns."Preliminary reports released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol show that 14 people were killed on Ohio's roadways between the Wednesday before and the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Clark County OVI Checkpoint (Nov. 23rd)

UPDATE:  OVI Checkpoint In Springfield Today An OVI checkpoint will be manned by the Ohio State Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officers on Wednesday from 8:30 p.m. until 12 midnight in downtown Springfield along U.S. 40 in front of the new hospital building.  Assisting in the checkpoint will be the Springfield Police Division, Clark County Sheriff Deputies, the Enon Police and medical personnel.  We had previously reported that a second checkpoint was operating in the afternoon in Springfield, but this report was wrong.
